I am Dr Nick Zygouris, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist offering in-person therapy in Birmingham and online therapy across the UK. My approach is thoughtful, evidence-based and tailored to you, not simply to a diagnosis.

Therapy offers a space to slow things down, talk openly, and make sense of what has been difficult. Sessions are collaborative and carefully paced. You will not be judged, rushed or given generic advice. Together, we focus on understanding your difficulties properly, identifying what may be keeping them going, and developing a clear therapeutic plan that fits your needs.

I support people experiencing anxiety, low mood, low self-esteem, trauma, relationship difficulties, chronic health-related distress, intense emotions, and more complex or longstanding difficulties. Got back from holiday… but somehow feel like you need another one? 🫠✈️ The post-holiday return to reality can be surprisingly stressful - and one of the biggest mistakes we make is planning every detail of the holiday while giving almost no thought to the transition back home. Dr Nick was recently featured by iNews / the i Paper, sharing his advice on how to make that return feel a little less overwhelming. A few things he recommends: ✈️ Think about the journey home, not just the journey there.
The cheapest flight isn’t always the lowest-cost option psychologically. Arriving home in the early hours and heading straight back to work, school or childcare can leave you sleep-deprived, irritable and with very little emotional capacity left. 🏡 Give yourself a ‘soft landing’.
Where possible, treat the journey home and first 24 hours as a transition period. Before you leave, think about clean bedding, an easy meal, breakfast, school or work clothes and anything else that will reduce the number of decisions your tired future self has to make. 🧳 Don’t exhaust yourself on the final day.
One last excursion, one last late dinner, drinks and then frantic packing at midnight? You may be starting the journey home already depleted. Packing earlier and keeping the final day calmer can make a real difference. ➡️ And finally, expect a little transition discomfort. Feeling flat, irritable or reluctant to return doesn’t necessarily mean your holiday “didn’t work”. It may simply reflect disrupted sleep and the sudden contrast between freedom and responsibility. But if that dread, anxiety or low mood persists, it can sometimes be worth asking a bigger question ➡️ is it the holiday ending that’s the problem - or what you’re returning to? If returning to everyday life is causing persistent stress, anxiety or low mood that is beginning to interfere with daily life, support from a qualified mental health professional can help you understand what is driving it and develop practical strategies that are tailored to you. Why can therapy feel worse before it feels better? 🤔⬇️⁣ ⁣ Because sometimes, the first step is 𝘯𝘰𝘵 feeling better immediately… it’s becoming more aware of what has been happening beneath the surface.⁣ ⁣ Therapy may involve talking about things you usually avoid.⁣ ⁣ Noticing patterns you had not fully seen before.⁣ ⁣ Understanding how you respond under stress.⁣ ⁣ Recognising triggers, coping strategies or relationship dynamics that have been keeping you stuck.⁣ ⁣ That awareness can feel uncomfortable at first 😳⁣ ⁣ ➡️ It can feel exposing to say certain things out loud.⁣ ⁣ ➡️ It can feel emotional to be vulnerable.⁣ ⁣ ➡️ It can feel difficult to look directly at things you have spent a long time trying not to feel.⁣ ⁣ But discomfort does not always mean therapy is failing. ⁣ ⁣ Sometimes it means you are working with material that 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 🙏⁣ ⁣ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿. Some weeks may feel lighter, others may feel harder. The key question is not always, “Do I feel better every week?”⁣ ⁣ It may be:⁣ ⁣ ➡️ “Do I understand why we are doing this?”⁣ ➡️ “Does the work connect with what I came here for?”⁣ ➡️ “Am I beginning to notice patterns or respond differently?”⁣ ⁣ Therapy should still feel safe, collaborative and purposeful. Three signs your therapy may be working 👇 Therapy progress is not always loud, obvious or linear. ➡️ Sometimes it looks like understanding the problem more clearly. ➡️ Sometimes it looks like noticing a pattern for the first time. ➡️ Sometimes it looks like responding differently in one small moment where you might previously have gone into autopilot. Here are three signs the work may be starting to make a difference: 1️⃣ You understand the problem better You’re beginning to make sense of what has been happening, why it may be happening and how it affects you. 2️⃣ You are noticing patterns In your thoughts, feelings, body or behaviour - you start to recognise the cycles that keep you stuck. 3️⃣ You are responding differently Even in small ways. A pause. A different choice. A new boundary. A moment of self-awareness instead of self-criticism. Using AI for mental health support? It might be worth talking to your therapist about it 💬⬇️⁣ ⁣ More people are using AI between sessions - to journal, organise their thoughts, seek reassurance, practise conversations or try to make sense of how they feel.⁣ ⁣ And for some people, this can be helpful 💻⁣ ⁣ It may offer a space to reflect, slow down or prepare for therapy.⁣ ⁣ ❌ 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆 ❌⁣ ⁣ It 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 replace human connection, clinical judgement, emotional safety or the experience of being properly known and understood by another person.⁣ ⁣ The important question is not simply whether AI is “good” or “bad” ⬇️⁣ ⁣ It is: ⁣ ⁣ ➡️ what role is it playing for you?⁣ ➡️ Is it helping you feel more reflective, grounded and able to connect?⁣ ➡️ Or is it becoming a way to seek reassurance, avoid difficult feelings or feel temporarily better without really working through what is happening?⁣ ⁣ This is exactly the kind of thing you can bring into therapy ✅⁣ ⁣ You do not need to feel embarrassed. You do not need the perfect words. You might simply say:⁣ ⁣ “I’ve been using AI between sessions.”⁣ “I think I use it for reassurance.”⁣ “I’m not sure if it’s helping or making things worse.”⁣ ⁣ That conversation could become really useful therapeutic work 🙏⁣ ⁣ 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆, 𝗔𝗜 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁. Spotting the signs of dementia early matters 🙏 Not because it changes everything overnight - but because it can help you understand what’s happening, access the right support and put practical strategies in place sooner. ➡️ Early diagnosis can help people get appropriate treatment, support and planning advice.
