A warm welcome by Dr Nick

I am Dr Nick Zygouris, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist offering in-person therapy in Birmingham and online therapy across the UK. My approach is thoughtful, evidence-based and tailored to you, not simply to a diagnosis.

Therapy offers a space to slow things down, talk openly, and make sense of what has been difficult. Sessions are collaborative and carefully paced. You will not be judged, rushed or given generic advice. Together, we focus on understanding your difficulties properly, identifying what may be keeping them going, and developing a clear therapeutic plan that fits your needs.

I support people experiencing anxiety, low mood, low self-esteem, trauma, relationship difficulties, chronic health-related distress, intense emotions, and more complex or longstanding difficulties. I also work with couples and families who want to repair, strengthen or better understand their relationships.

Mental Health & Therapy Tips for Real Life

What should you do if therapy isn’t working for you? 👀🤔⬇️

One of the most useful things you can do is say so.

I know that can feel awkward.

Many people worry they’ll offend their therapist, seem ungrateful, or be seen as “difficult” 😩

But a good therapist will want to know when the work isn’t landing ✅👨🏻‍⚕️

You could say something like:

💬 “I’m finding it difficult to say this, but I’m not sure therapy is helping yet.”
💬 “I think I might need a bit more structure.”
💬 “I leave sessions feeling upset, but I’m not sure what to do with it.”
💬 “I’m not sure we’re focusing on the thing I came here for.”

That conversation can be incredibly valuable 🙏

It may help your therapist adjust the approach, understand what you need more clearly, or create a more helpful structure for your sessions.

And if it can’t be discussed safely or openly, that is useful information too.

Therapy should be a space where feedback is welcomed, not avoided 🙏

Anxiety isn’t “just worrying” ❌

It can feel lonely, exhausting and all-consuming - and for some people, it starts to affect everyday life, relationships, sleep, confidence and the things they used to enjoy.

Anxiety is part of our internal alarm system. It’s there to protect us. But when that alarm becomes too sensitive, it can start warning us about danger even when we’re safe.

That’s often when anxiety begins to feel difficult to manage 😖

A Clinical Psychologist can help you understand what anxiety is, how it affects you, what triggers it, and which unhelpful beliefs may be keeping it going 🙏

Therapy can also support you with practical strategies to manage anxiety more effectively, reduce overall anxiety levels and create a realistic plan to prevent relapse.

You don’t have to keep avoiding the things that make you anxious ❌

With the right support, it is possible to understand anxiety, build confidence, and gradually start reclaiming parts of your life that anxiety may have taken over ✅

Hoarding is 𝐧𝐨𝐭 laziness ❌

It’s not simply being “messy”, “disorganised” or “unwilling to throw things away” ❌

For many people, hoarding is linked to deep emotional distress, anxiety, trauma, grief, perfectionism, indecision or a fear of making the “wrong” choice.

Objects can become tied to memories, safety, identity or responsibility. The thought of letting something go can feel genuinely overwhelming - even when the clutter itself is causing stress, shame or difficulty at home.

That’s why telling someone to “just clear it out” rarely helps ❌

In fact, forced clear-outs can often increase distress and make the cycle worse if the emotional reasons behind the hoarding are not understood.

Support starts with compassion, not criticism 🙏

It means understanding what the items represent, what fears come up around discarding them and helping someone build the skills and confidence to make decisions gradually and safely.

Hoarding can be incredibly isolating, but it is something people can get support for 🙌

If this resonates with you, or someone you care about, please know that help is available - and change does not have to happen all at once.

“Sessions with Dr Nick were thoughtful and focused. I felt listened to without pressure, and gradually things began to lift. It’s been transformative.” 🙏🗣️⭐️

A kind review from a patient, and a reminder of what good therapy should feel like.

Therapy does not have to mean being pushed, judged or expected to explain everything perfectly from the first appointment.

At Stronger Minds, the process begins with understanding 🙏

That means taking time to listen properly, explore what has been happening, think carefully about patterns and goals, and build a therapeutic approach that feels focused, thoughtful and clinically appropriate.

Progress in therapy is not always immediate or linear. But with the right support, space and formulation, things can begin to feel clearer, lighter and more manageable over time.

What happens at your first therapy appointment? 💭👀🤔

❌ Your first psychology appointment is not a test you have to pass.
❌ You are not expected to explain everything perfectly.
❌ You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis.
❌ And you do not need to know exactly what type of therapy you need.

A first appointment is usually about beginning to understand what is happening.

That might include talking about your symptoms, history, relationships, stress, risk, previous therapy experiences, medication, goals and what you hope might change ✅

The aim is not to pressure you into treatment.

The aim is to think carefully about fit, formulation and next steps - so that any support offered is thoughtful, appropriate and genuinely useful 🙏

Good psychological therapy starts with understanding - not rushing.

OCD is not an adjective ❌

It is not a quirky way of describing someone who is neat, organised, a perfectionist, or likes the house spotless.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a serious mental health condition that deserves to be understood properly - and spoken about with compassion 🙏

OCD can involve:

- Distressing, intrusive thoughts
- Compulsions a person feels driven to carry out
- Intense anxiety and doubt
- And a repetitive cycle that can become genuinely debilitating

❌ It is not a personality trait.
❌ It is not a throwaway label.
❌ And it is not something to minimise.

The more accurately we understand OCD, the better we can talk about it - and the better support people can receive.
